Writing Partners

Our volunteer writing partners are people of different ages, life stages and religious, cultural and education backgrounds. They share the desire to learn more about the Holocaust and support survivors in telling their stories in the manner that was meaningful to them.

Survivor: Rita Tate

It is very difficult for me to put into words what was one of the most compelling experiences of my life. The time I spent with Rita affected me deeply, as the reality of the Holocaust was set out before me in such vivid detail. Rita showed me what resilience she had as a young child thrown into such a horrific situation. I can’t imagine myself as a child being able to function as she did with her involvement in the underground and then the loss of her mother. I think about my own grandchildren, who I didn’t yet have during my time with Rita.

There is so much I could say about hearing Rita’s story and the impact it has had on me. Rita is an extraordinary woman, so smart and well read. It was an honour to be able to sit with her for so many hours and hear her recount her story.
